"Venom": Little Simz

Production: Inflo

Album: GREY Area

Opening with a build-up of quivering strings that are menacing enough for a film score, Venom conveys an urgency which unapologetically demands the full attention of its listener. Rather than taking a back seat once Little Simz begins rapping, these strings haunt the track relentlessly until about a quarter of the way in when Simz spits the lines, ‘Pussy, you sour. / Never givin’ credit where it’s due ‘cause you don’t like pussy in power’, adding extra weight to her words here and making the beat drop which follows that much more satisfying. Then enter the hi-hats which hiss unsettlingly whilst Simz continues to rap with intimidating control and impressive speed.

Such intensity both in terms of instrumentation and vocals make listening to this track an exhilarating experience and, for me, undoubtedly posits Little Simz at the forefront of British Hip Hop right now.
