“Thief In The Night”: Rod Wave⁣

Production: Drell On The Track & Trillo Beats⁣

Album: (Single)

Revolver gang, we pull up, drop, and get away with it, days with it/ Better tell them boys to pay attention 'cause stains are different/ Be lost in my thoughts, bae, I'm trippin'⁣

Rod Wave’s ‘Thief In The Night’ single follows his 2019 debut ‘Ghetto Gospel’. The album fits perfectly into the current canon of southern hip hop, with crooning and rapping in equal measure. The album was even produced by Kevin Gates, o.g. confessional street rapper and one of Rod Wave’s early influences. What sets Rod Wave apart from the developing crowd of sadder ‘pain’ rappers such as Youngboy Never Broke Again are his other influences, E-40, Chingy, Boosie Badazz, Kanye West, and Kevin Gates.⁣

The disparate influences are clear in his music: the rawness of Boosie Badazz, the confessions of Kevin Gates, and directness of Kanye. The cited lyric is the best example of this, as Rod Wave transforms a snarl into a warble, shifting from bravado to brooding.
