“Sebenza”: LV ft. Okmalumkoolkat⁣

Production: LV⁣

Album: Sebenza

“Sebenza” (work in Zulu), the 2012 offering from the producer trio is their most enthusiastic exercise in genre-mincing. The foundation finds Kwaito, Johannesburg house, meeting South-London UK funky, familiar to fans of the influential Hyperdub label, for an overlapping medley of driving riddims. Flashing synths are interspersed with quivering squeals to generate some real, real musicality. The sonic inspiration comes from South African taxi drivers affiliated to local soundsystems, who share music by convening for raves and drag races by the sea, Travis Bickle’s utopia.⁣

South African musician Okmalumkoolkat lends his vocals to the title track “Sebenza” wittily springing off the many audio hinges left throughout the track. All Sebenza and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
