‘Il primo e lo secondo/ tanto chi vidi de le cose belle/ che porta il ciel, per un pertugio tondo/ e quindi uscimmo a riveder le stele.’ I mean for fuck’s sake the song is a trip that ends with a quote from Dante’s Inferno. What more do you want?
Most artists couldn’t get away with this. They couldn’t get away with sounding uncannily like Ghostface Killah (if you’re in the mood check out their beef it’s hilarious); they couldn’t get away with this level of pretension nor could they get away with a flow that wafts in and out of time and comprehension but Action does and always will do. But for all of Action Bronson’s wild and often random references, Chop Chop Chop is actually a more coherent song. Framed by the opening of the track where he begins his trip (and a bad case of smoker’s cough) and the end where an unnamed narrator reads Inferno the listener is taken on a trip (sorry, couldn’t help myself) of pop culture drug references and puns, finally to emerge, like Dante, out of the smoke and into the stars.
