A Lite

Updated: Aug 20, 2020

"A Lite": Buddy

Production: KAYTRANADA

Album: Ocean and Montana

For 2 minutes, this is actually quite an okay song. For the next 2 minutes, this is the worst song in the world.

This is not a rare phenomenon. Many great openings are undermined by what follows. Solskjaer’s initial success overshadowed by a pitiful post-PSG slump; Falstaff’s comic timing eclipsed by his anticlimactic encounter with Hal in Henry IV Part II. It’s a game of two halves, and Buddy, even with the help of KAYTRANADA, can do little to prevent his own reliance on weed imagery getting the better of him, as he turns a slick track into a cacophony of wackness.

As Buddy goes from intricate flows in his first verse to shout-singing “the number one kuussh” 6 times as the song comes to a painful end, we are reminded, once more, that “virtue is chok’d with foul ambition”.
